Polish Customs

Christmas carols are called Kolendy in Poland. (One carol is a Kolenda). They are sung on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Eve everyone joins hands after dinner and walks around the Christmas tree. A manger scene is placed underneath the Christmas tree. Midnight Mass is held. (5)

Kulig: December 29th

After Christmas when there’s been a deep snowfall, friends take to horse-drawn sleighs for the Kulig – a winter sleigh party. They throw firecrackers as they ride, and children tumble into snowdrifts. A fire is made in a forest spot and everyone eats. Afterward they dance around the fire. (16)
