Austrian Customs:
On Christmas Eve presents are opened, dinner is eaten, midnight mass is attended. A candle is lighted and placed in the window in memory of the dead. On Christmas Day families visit. Carols and skiing are popular. There are Hirtenlieder, lullaby carols, dance carols, companion carols, advent carols, star carols, and carols that can only be sung by yodelers.
Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht: Silent Night, Holy Night was written by Father Joseph Mohr and Franz Grüber in St. Nicholas Church, Oberndorf in 1818. A memorial to Mohr and Grüber called the Silent Night Chuch stands next to St. Nicholas church in Oberndorf. (1)
