Dance Costume In dance competitions women usually wear their hair in a bun. Unmarried Scottish women have their hair loose. The official dance costume consists of a skirt made of plaid, black or dark velvet corseted vest, and white puffed sleeve peasant blouse. The other costume is a white knee-length dress with long bell shaped sleeves and plaid sash with a brooch attached to the shoulder. Soft black leather lace up shoes called ghillies are worn. They are like ballet slippers with criss crossed laces that are wrapped around the ankle. Very young women may be seen in mens costume and this is falling out of favor. (1, 3) |
