The Sword of State is another piece of royal regalia. It was presented to King James IV by Pope Julius II in 1507. It is five feet long and ornamented with silver and filigree work. It lies in a scabbard of crimson velvet. The belt for it was discovered in May of 1898 by the Rev. Samuel Ogilvy Baker hidden in a wall at Barras, Kincardineshire. The Ogilvy of Barras had apparantly hid it to keep it safe from Cromwell. (1)
