Olde Civil Parish Church of Templeneiry, Bansha. Church interior, restoration in progress.

Bansha Kilmoyler 2000

Restoration of the Olde Civil Parish Church of Templeneiry, Bansha, is underway.

It is thought that the church was built pre-reformation in 1615 as a Catholic church, hence both denominations are buried in the surrounding graveyard. The Church was re-built in 1794 on a smaller scale. The Church is of regional architectural significance because of its spire which was constructed in 1814 on the “curious mound”. There is an underground vault beneath the Church and the Church graveyard is the final resting place of many distinguished families and famous people of the area. Darby Ryan is buried in this graveyard and there is an interesting history attached to his headstone. Canon John Hayes is laid to rest in the neighbouring graveyard at the rear of the Catholic Church.

Bansha / Kilmoyler 2000 intends to undertake the conservation, restoration and sympathetic development of the Olde Parish Church. Among many uses, it will serve as a community co-ordination office, a resource and information centre and a learning centre for the local community.
