History
Tipperary South Riding County Council was established under the Local Government Act, 1898. Today there are 26 elected members representing the 5 Electoral Areas of Cahir, Cashel, Clonmel, Fethard and Tipperary town, and a staff of 492. The inaugural meeting was held on 22nd April, 1899 in the Courthouse, Clonmel.
Environment
Tipperary is famed in song and story and renowned for its scenic beauty, heritage and culture, its equine industry, and the warmth of its welcome for visitors. Tipperary is Ireland’s largest inland County, boasts the loftiest inland range of mountains, enjoys some of the most fertile land, “The Golden Vale”, and is drained and adorned by the river Suir, and its tributaries.
South Tipperary comprises an area of 225,836 hectares, i.e. 872 square miles, with a population of 75,364 as per the 1996 Census.
County Tipperary’s Coat of Arms, from reception / exhibit area, County Council Offices. The lion at the top of the shield depicts the lion over the doorway of Cormac’s Chapel in Cashel. The centre is taken from the Clonmel Coat of Arms and represents the River Suir. The motto “Vallis Aurea Suriensis” means Golden Vale of the Suir.
